EPCglobal is leading the development of industry-driven standards for the Electronic Product Code™ (EPC) to support the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in today’s fast-moving, information rich, trading networks.

EPCglobal is a joint venture between GS1, (formerly EAN International) and the Uniform Code Council, EPCglobal Inc is a neutral, not-for-profit standards organization consisting of manufacturers, technology solution providers and retailers that are driving the global, multi industry adoption of the EPCglobal Network.

EPCglobal has a long heritage. One of its parent organizations, the Uniform Code Council, was responsible for driving global adoption of the bar code in the 1970s and 1980s.

The concept of the EPCglobal Network was conceived by the Auto-ID Center, a global research team directed through the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with laboratories around the world. Their research was supported by more than 100 leading manufacturers and retailers and focused on harnessing the power of RFID for commercial applications. Companies and consumers are the ultimate beneficiaries of the EPCglobal Network, as it enables organizations to be more efficient, flexible and responsive to customer needs.
